Here I Stand

On Tuesday AFCOE-Europe took a day trip to Worms. Worms was the city that Martin Luther was called to, to stand before the Diet of Vorms. The Papal powers wanted him to recant all that he said and wrote, but he flatly refused.

This is the Cathedral in Worms. Martin Luther was never allowed to enter the building because when he went to Worms he was already pronounced a heretic, and heretics were forbidden to enter churches.

The Inside of the Cathedral. Wow.... a little bit of money put into this church! You can imagine why people were so intimidated by the Catholic Church. They had so much money and power!

It's huge!!! And yeah it's beautiful, but it's so impersonal. I like small New England Churches much better.

All the leaves are coming out!!!!

This door was pretty awesome!

(Translation: "Here I Stand Before Emperor and Kingdom")

This was the place where Martin Luther made his famous speech, "I cannot and will recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen." This plaque is outside in a garden. The building in which Luther made his famous stand against the forces of evil was destroyed by the Counter Reformation (The Jesuits).

The Worms Dom (Cathedral)

This is the Reformation Monument in the center of Worms.

These little brass plates are placed in front of all the houses where Jews used to live before being sent off to concentration camps.

This is a very old Jewish Synagogue. Some the Building has been there since the 11th century!

This is the inside of the synagogue. The inside was all burned out right before World War 2.

Phillip Melanchton (Contemporary of Martin Luther)

Peter Waldo (His followers were called Waldensians)

Johannes Hus (John Huss)
(Was a reformer about 100 years before Martin Luther. He was burned at the stake for his beliefs, but he died singing praises to God!)

It's a cat!
